Uganda is facing an alarming malnutrition crisis. As of 2024, 29% of children under the age of five are stunted, 4% are suffering from wasting, and 11% are classified as underweight (UBOS, 2024). This means that nearly one in three children is struggling to grow strong and healthy.
Recent events have exacerbated the situation. Floods in Eastern Uganda have devastated communities, worsening hunger and malnutrition (Daily Monitor, 2024). In addition, droughts in the Karamoja Region have led to food shortages, impacting over 100,000 people (UNICEF, 2024).
The consequences of malnutrition are severe, including stunted growth, poor cognitive development, and an increased risk of diseases. Malnutrition costs Uganda 5.6% of its GDP annually (World Bank, 2024), hindering both economic growth and human development. Pregnant mothers and children under the age of two are particularly vulnerable.
